Samsung Galaxy S6 Active vs. Samsung Galaxy S5: they look similar on the outside but they come with quite different hardware

The Galaxy S6 Active and the Galaxy S5 might both rely a lot on plastic for their build, but in terms of specs, they are totally different. Here is how the recently released waterproof and rugged S6 Active compares to last year's Galaxy S5.

Design

The S6 Active is a device built to endure hazardous situations and environments. It comes with a solid plastic body that is reinforced with hard plastic and rubber on its sides. As for its back panel, it has a camouflaged coating that comes in two colors blue and white but there is also a plain gray version available for those who might not want the camouflage look. It has an IP68 certification which means it can be submerged in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes and it also has a MIL-STD-810G rating from the US military which means it is immune to vibration and thermal shock.

As for the Galaxy S5, it has a plastic body with a back panel covered with faux leather. It is also water proof as it comes with an IP67 rating allowing it to be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. Its advantage over the S6 Active is the fingerprint sensor just below its display. In terms of colors, it comes in black, white, blue and gold.

Display

The display on the S6 Active is much sharper as it consists of a super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen measuring 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a density of 576 pixels per inch. As for the Galaxy S5, it has a super AMOLED screen, measuring 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a density of 432 pixels per inch.

Specs

The specs of the Galaxy S5 might be older than the specs of its competitor but they are pretty impressive. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801chipset, a Krait 400 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU. The S6 Active has a better Exynos 7420 chipset, an octa-core CPU comprised of four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and four Cortex-A57 cores clocked at 2.1 GHz and a Mali-T760 GPU.

Memory

There is a no memory slot on the S6 Active but the S5 has a slot which allows for the addition of up to 128 GB of external storage. In terms of RAM, the Galaxy S5 only has 2 GB while the S6 Active has 3 GB.

Price

The Galaxy S6 Active costs $199 with a two-year contract while the Galaxy S5 costs $99 with a similar contract.
