Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos rumors and images: New live photos back up previous leaks of dual SIM variant

(Reuters)

New images of the purported Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos have surfaced online, showing two nano-SIM card slots built in the device and confirming earlier leaks and rumors of the South Korean manufacturer's plans to launch a dual SIM variant of the Galaxy S6.

Samsung's most anticipated smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, are set for a global launch early next month, though the company appears to be also targeting some regions with other variants. Earlier this month, Samsung was rumored to launch the dual-SIM variant of its 2015 flagship, the Galaxy S6. A report citing local company representatives had claimed that Samsung would also be launching a dual-SIM variant of the Galaxy S6 in Philippines. According to the report, the Galaxy S6 would support dual Nano-SIM cards, while only one slot would support 4G LTE.

Last week, a Russian online retailer had listed a dual-SIM variant of the Samsung Galaxy S6, dubbed the Galaxy S6 Duos, on its website. The images posted by the Russian online retailer showed the Samsung Galaxy S6 Duos with model number of SM-G920, featuring two SIM slots and a 5.1-inch Quad HD display. Listed with 64GB of storage and a gold design, the dual-SIM Galaxy S6 64GB variant was priced at RUB 52,990, or about $893.

The new photos show the Galaxy S6 Duos with two nano-SIM card slots and even show how the slot can be removed to insert the SIMs into the smartphone. However, the model number SM-G9200 of the Duos variant shown in the images is different from the one listed on the Russian website.

The new images do not show any noticeable differences between the standard version of Samsung's flagship phone and the dual-SIM version. This means that the Galaxy S6 Duos is likely to have specifications matching those present in the Galaxy S6, including an Exynos 7 octa-core processor, a 2550mAh battery, 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

If these images and rumors are true, then the Galaxy S6 will become one of the first flagship handsets from Samsung to receive a dual-SIM variant, as the Samsung Galaxy S5 launched internationally supported only a single SIM. Even the dual curved-display variant, Galaxy S6 Edge, is expected to be available only in a single-SIM model. The Galaxy S6 Duos is likely to be available only in countries where dual-SIM setups are more common, such as Russia and some parts of Asia.
