Samsung Gear S vs. Moto 360: these smartwatches have great looks and great specs

Before the Apple Watch arrived to steal the thunder from other smartwatches in the marketplace, the Samsung Gear S and the Moto 360 were some of the best selling devices. Here is how they compare against each other.

Design

When it comes to looks, the Moto 360 has a round body while the Gear S has a rectangular body that is curved. The Moto 360 is crafted from stainless steel and comes in grey and black and its has default leather straps which can be swapped out with any standard 22mm version available in the marketplace. However, there are also steel straps created specifically for the Moto 360 and these come with a silver or gold polish. Coming to its water and dust resistance the device from Motorola has an IP 67 rating and can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

The Gear S has a body that is crafted largely from plastic but there are hints of stainless steel in it and it comes in two colors white and black. As for its straps they are also made from plastic and they can only be swapped out with others purchased for the device. When it comes to dust and water proofing the Gear S has a similar IP 67 rating like the Moto 360, but where it is extremely different is that it has a nano-sim and therefore can be used to make and receive phone calls without being paired with a phone.

Display

The Moto 360 has an IPS display measuring 1.56 inches with a resolution of 320 x 290 pixels and a density of 205 pixels per inch, while the Gear S has a super AMOLED 2.0 inch display with a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels and a density of 300 pixels per inch.

Specs

On the Gear S is a CPU with two cores clocked at 1 GHz along with 512MB RAM and 4 GB internal memory, while the Moto 360 has a TI OMAP 3 chipset along with 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal memory.

Sensor

Both devices have heart rate sensors; additionally the Gear S has an accelerometer, compass, barometer, gyroscope ambient light sensor and the Moto 360 has a pedometer.

Price

The Moto 360 is priced at $250 while the Gear S can be got for around $299.
