Samsung Gear S2 vs. Moto 360 2: Moto device offers more customization options

There has been a slew of smartwatches entering the market recently, but very few can compare to the Moto 360 2 and the Gear S2 from Samsung. Here is how these two round-bodied devices compare.

Design

The Gear S2 only has one size, but its body is not very big, so it looks just like a normal wristwatch. In addition, it displays the time continuously. As for its body, it is made of stainless steel and there are two versions available: the Gear S2, which has a sporty look and feel and the Gear S2 Classic, which is designed along the lines of a traditional watch. As for its bands, there are a number offered by Samsung, but by default, the Gear S2 comes with a leather band. The Gear S2 Classic, on the other hand, has a black body and black leather band. As for its water and dust proof rating, the device has an IP68 certification and can be immersed in up to 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes. The Gear S2 also has a rotating bezel which can be used to navigate to apps, zoom into portions of the screen or scroll through pages.

The Moto 360 2 is the better looking device. It comes in two sizes: the 42 mm model aimed at women and the 46 mm model aimed at men. As for the round body, it comes in silver, gold, black and rose gold. Users can design their watch on the Moto Maker website, where they can also pick the color they want for the body. As for the bands of the device, the materials available are leather, double-wrapped leather and metal. It has an IP67 rating and it can be immersed in up to 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes.

As for the operating systems of these devices, the Moto 360 2 runs Android Wear and can be paired with iOS and Android devices, while the Gear S2 runs Tizen and can only be paired with Android devices.

Display

The Moto 360 2 still comes with the "flat tire." The device has an IPS LCD display. Its bigger model has a 1.56-inch version with a resolution of 360 x 330 pixels and a density of 233 pixels per inch while its smaller model has a 1.37-inch display with a resolution of 360 x 325 pixels and a density of 263 pixels per inch. As for the Gear S2, it has a better quality 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels and a density of 302 pixels per inch.

Specs

There is a dual core processor in the Gear S2 clocked at 1.0 GHz and it comes with 4 GB of onboard storage and 512 MB of RAM. As for the Moto 360 2, it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor along with a quad-core CPU clocked at 1.2 GHz , an Adreno 305 GPU, 4 GB of onboard storage and 512 MB of RAM.

Sensors

Onboard the Moto 360 2 is a gyroscope, accelerometer, ambient light sensor, optical heart rate monitor and haptics engine while the Gear S2 comes with a heart rate sensor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope and ambient light sensor.

Price

The Gear S2 is expected to cost around $349 when it gets released in stores in October while its Classic version could cost around $399. As for the Moto 360 2, its lowest-priced model costs $299.99 but other models goes as high as $429.99.
