San Antonio Spurs trade rumors 2016: Danny Green unnecessary with Jonathon Simmons rising?

It was just one game but guard Jonathon Simmons made a name for himself when his team, the San Antonio Spurs, embarrassed the Golden State Warriors on opening night, 129-100. Because of his emergence, there was a suggestion that they should keep him and part ways with Danny Green.

Green is the main shooting guard for the Spurs, but unfortunately, he needs to spend some time on the sidelines due to his strained quadriceps. In his absence, Simmons took over and surprised many.

Seeing action for 28 minutes, Simmons was among the guys who spoiled Kevin Durant's debut with the Dubs. Off the bench, the 27-year-old recorded 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and one rejection. That lone block was against back-to-back Most Valuable Player (MVP) Stephen Curry.

Simmons is expected to ascend further and this led to some thinking that the Spurs must make him stay and bid farewell to Green instead.

Green has been with the Spurs for over five years now and has proven his worth to the franchise. The former 46th overall pick (2009 draft) has already helped the team to a championship in 2014. He is their starter at the no. 2 position and his outside shooting makes him one of Gregg Popovich's main weapons in his arsenal.

However, for Simmons to fully reach his potential, others believe that the right thing to do is to trade Green. This may be considered by the Spurs since their outing versus the Warriors showed that even without him, they can still be among the best in the league.

If ever Green is placed on the trade block, it is unlikely to be difficult for the Spurs to find takers. The latter is not really a scorer but his ability to hit from long range is something a lot of teams covet nowadays with the game revolving around shooters and guards.
