In a move that has drawn criticism from various religious denominations, a group of Satanists in Detroit, Michigan gathered on Saturday evening and unveiled a statue of Baphomet. The idol which was first mentioned in the 14th century and has a head of a goat and the body of a man and woman has since been adopted as a symbol of Satan.

The current idol of Baphomet, which was unveiled before a gathering of Satanists and other curious onlookers, was commissioned by the Detroit edition of The Satanic Temple. It depicts a man with a head of a goat and wings, sitting on a throne while two children, a boy and girl, looked at him.

This statue, as the Satanists stated, adheres to their beliefs and it is in response to the marble slab bearing the Ten Commandments which had been installed on the property of the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Since that installation, the Satanists had tried to get the statue of Baphomet installed nearby as a representation of their own faith but they could not get their way as the state refused to budge on the issue.

As for the current statue, its unveiling took place in a warehouse and people were invited to the ceremony which was described as "tame" by Time Magazine.

The Satanic Temple and its members, however, described the ceremony as "history in the making" and filled with "chaos and debauchery." They charged a $25 entrance fee.

Needless to say, the event drew stiff opposition from protestors who gathered outside the venue and others who attended a mass at a nearby church. However, Todd Sanders, who is a Minister at Strictly Biblical Bible Teaching Ministries in the city, stated that "Christians should not be fearful as this was an opportunity to see what the Satanic Temple believes in."

As for where the bronze statue will finally lie, there is no indication. However, it is likely that The Satanic Temple will contest the placing of the Ten Commandments at the State Capitol in Arkansas and they might petition to place this idol there.
