'Scandal' season 6 air date, spoilers: Does Fitz want Olivia back?

(Facebook/ScandalABC)Fitz says goodbye to the White House in "Scandal" season 6.

President Fitzgerald Grant's (Tony Goldwyn) first agenda after stepping down from his position may be to pursue Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) in the upcoming season of "Scandal."

Rumors about Goldwyn's exit from the show got fans worried until the showrunners made it clear he was not going anywhere. In fact, they already have plans for Fitz in the new season, but at the moment, it is being kept a secret.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Betsy Beers said they have such high hopes for him and anything is possible in his storyline. Fans hope it will mean winning Olivia back and giving Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) a run for his money.

"When Fitz is out of office, I think he could do anything he wanted. I don't want him to move to Vermont and make jam immediately — I'm not a big fan of that — but I think he could become an advocate, a judge, a private eye or join OPA or have his own post-Scandal show where he does anything. Spinoff! Fitz could do pretty much anything as far as I'm concerned," the EP said.

The last installment was hard for Olitz shippers. Olivia left Fitz and got an abortion. Her feelings for Jake took center stage while Fitz was busy having an affair with a leggy reporter. Olivia even helped Jake escape from her father Rowan's (Joe Morton) machination by making him Mellie's (Bellamy Young) running mate in the upcoming presidential elections. Both admitted that they love each other, reducing the chances that Olivia would ever get back with Fitz.

Shonda Rhimes previously told Entertainment Weekly that season 6 would be kind to the fixer for a change. She certainly deserves to have some fun after going through a lot. According to the showrunner, they would be heading to an "optimistic" place in the new installment, where violent deaths and abortion would hopefully have no place. Will it mean settling down for Olivia? Who will be the lucky guy?

"Scandal" season 6 is expected to premiere midseason 2017 on ABC.
