'Sherlock' season 4 news: Benedict Cumberbatch clarifies previous statement that ignited cancellation rumors

(Facebook / Sherlock)Benedict Cumberbatch has clarified his statements to the British GQ Magazine, which led fans to believe that "Sherlock" season four is the last of the hit series

Over the past few weeks, "Sherlock" has been in hot water due to the rumors that suggested there will no longer be a season 5 after season 4 wraps up next year.

While the rumors allegedly started after Benedict Cumberbatch spoke with the British GQ last month for its November issue, the actor has come out of his shell, slamming the reports and clarifying what he really meant at that time. He said there's a big difference between saying that the show will really end for good after "Sherlock" season 4 and mentioning that the show may end "for now."

According to RTE News, Cumberbatch explained to the Associated Press that the published article was a "complete distortion" of what he said during the interview for the magazine.

"We love doing the show and all I'll say about it is that we're all very busy... for now, it's not going to happen again in the same regularity that it has been happening. But we'll see, we'll never say never and when it's right, and if it's right, we'll do more," he said.

The "Doctor Strange" star further explained that he will no longer "make an announcement through a magazine that we're not going to do any more of that show, it's not my responsibility to do that. That was a bit of irresponsible journalism."

As fans know, there has been a lot of drama on social media platforms and forums that focus on "Sherlock" after the said interview, but now that Cumberbatch has clarified his statements, viewers can at least relax "for now" and take any cancellation rumors with a grain of salt.

Meanwhile, a very short exchange between "Outlander" star Sam Heughan and "Sherlock" co-creator Mark Gatiss has flipped fans over. The said Twitter greeting has led fans to believe that Heughan may have been tapped to join "Sherlock" season 4 as Sherrinford Holmes, one of Sherlock's brothers.

Though there is no confirmation about the reports, and the short social media exchange could just have meant nothing but plain catching up between the two, many are looking forward to a potential appearance from Heughan in the upcoming installment.

BBC has yet to make an official announcement about the show's premiere date in the United States but "Sherlock" season 4 is expected to start airing in the United Kingdom by the New Year.
