'Skyrim' remastered release date: why game will not be made available for free to console gamers

(Bethesda)

To the delight of many gamers, Bethesda finally unveiled the remastered version of "Skyrim" during the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), and they followed that announcement up with details about its availability.

Shortly after the grand reveal, Bethesda announced that the remastered version of the fantasy RPG will be made available to some players.

Specifically, Bethesda revealed over on Twitter that players who already owned the game and all of its add-ons on Steam or even the "Legendary Edition" would be receiving a free upgrade to the new "Skyrim Special Edition," also known as the one announced during E3.

It certainly seems like a sweet deal for PC gamers, but considering that the remastered title is also being released for the PS4 and the Xbox One, some fans may be wondering why they aren't getting a free upgrade as well.

Bethesda VP for PR and marketing Pete Hines addressed some of the fan questions regarding this issue over on Twitter.

In response to one fan known as "@xTHEV1P3Rx" asking whether or not the remastered version of the game coming to the Xbox One would also be made available for free to those who already had the digital copy of "Skyrim" as well as the DLC packs for the Xbox 360, Hines indicated that players would still have to purchase the updated version since they are getting it for a new and different platform.

Since the PS4 would also be a new platform for "Skyrim," then players who prefer that console will have to purchase the remastered version of it as well if they want to enjoy all the additions being offered.

Aside from being released with all the add-ons already made available for the original version of the game, console players who get "Skyrim Special Edition" will also gain access to mods, as noted on its official web site.

The remastered version of "Skyrim" will be released on Oct. 28.
