Sony working on the Wena Wrist smartwatch with sensors in the band

With a number of smartwatches being launched by companies like Motorola and Asus, it will not be surprising if Sony does offer its own smartwatch device at the IFA 2015. The Japanese manufacturer has remained silent about its wearable devices, but has set up a crowdfunding project for the Sony Wena Wrist smartwatch.

Listed on its own website, Sony describes the Wena, the abbreviation of (wear electronics naturally) as a device that focuses on three areas: electronic wallet payments, notifications and activity tracking. As for models, it will have two: a Quartz Three Hands and a Quartz Chronograph; and each will come in two colors, silver and premium black.

The Wall Street Journal, reporting on the device, states that most of the functions, including the Japanese version of NFC, which goes by the name of FeliCa, are integrated into the strap of the device. To make a payment through the watch, the user simply needs to place the strap on top of a reader.

It is important to take note, however, that the Sony Wena Wrist's face will only display the time and date. All other functions will be performed by the band. When notifications are received, an LED light starts to blink or the user will feel a gentle vibration. Once they do, then they can check the alerts on their paired smartphone.

Activity tracking, on the other hand, is performed with the aid of the app on the phone. Unfortunately, Android users will probably have to wait for more news regarding whether the device will eventually become compatible to their OS, since as of now, the Wena Wrist can only be paired with a device running iOS.

A big advantage that the Wena Wrist has over other smartwatches is that its battery lasts for years and does not have to be recharged daily like other smartwatches. Its band, however, has to be charged weekly.

The device is expected to land sometime in April of next year and its cheapest model is going to be the Three Hands in silver, which could be priced at around $287.
