'South Park' season 20 premiere episode records highest rating in the last 10 years

Comedy Central's animated sitcom "South Park" has already aired two episodes after its season 20 return. Even though it has been airing for a long time now, the new season just recorded its highest rating since 2006.

"South Park" started off the 20th season in the best position after its premiere episode recorded the series' highest rating for the past 10 years. In a press release by Comedy Central, it was revealed that episode 1 of season 20 garnered a total of 3.7 million viewers, which is 27% better than the past season's premiere.

According to speculations, the big bump in the numbers could be because of the fact that the animated series has already reached two decades. Another reason could also be because of the promotion within the gaming community. There is an upcoming video game title "South Park: The Fractured But Whole," which was showcased at this year's Ubisoft E3 gaming event. Because of the game's humor, it may have stirred curiosity among the gamers who are not familiar with the series. However, the most likely reason for its successful season 20 start is the overall creation of the episode 1 itself.

Since it is a sitcom, each episode has its own plot that may no longer be continued in the next episode. The series recently celebrated its 20th season, and creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone shared about working for the sitcom for 20 years.

"We had grown up with sitcom comedy," Parker said. "Sitcom comedy had it so at the end of the show, everything's got to go back to one so next week you can do whatever you want. And that was partly because you'd go into syndication and the shows would get all scrambled up and you didn't want it to matter."

The previous episode, titled "Skank Hunt," saw Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Butters taking down Cartman, an Internet troll. The episode was viewed as a social commentary on Internet trolling and online harassment.

"South Park" season 20 airs every Wednesday on Comedy Central.
