Filming for the third installment of the rebooted 'Star Trek' franchise is reportedly ready to start this coming summer in Vancouver, Canada, according to a report at Van City Buzz. Following the departure of previous director J.J. Abrams, who moved to Trek's sci-fi rival 'Star Wars', the film's producers have chosen 'Fast and Furious' director Justin Lin to take over the franchise.

There haven't been too many details regarding 'Star Trek 3' but there is increased pressure on the franchise and its future following somewhat lackluster box office results. The first installment of the rebooted 'Star Trek' was a critical success but grossed only $380 million worldwide due to a weak performance at the international box office. The sequel 'Star Trek Into Darkness' took in $460 million, a disappointing number as producers expected more following the positive buzz generated by the first 'Star Trek'.

Still, the cast of the rebooted 'Star Trek' remains very strong and has been well-received by fans of the series. Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), and John Cho (Sulu) are all slated to return for the third installment. For now, no information on the storyline has been released but the return of the original cast should be welcome news for 'Star Trek' fans.

In other news, there have been rumors online as to who will play the main villain in the next installment. This report from Screen Rant indicates that 'Breaking Bad's' Bryan Cranston is currently being considered for a major role in the film. Cranston was previously linked to 'Batman vs Superman' a few months back where he was reportedly being eyed to play the villain Lex Luthor, no doubt in large part due to the buzz from his Walter White portrayal in 'Breaking Bad'. That rumor didn't pan out so take this new rumor with a grain of salt until otherwise confirmed by more official sources.
