"Star Trek" fans recently received some bad news when it was announced that Bryan Fuller would not be continuing as showrunner of "Star Trek: Discovery," a new scripted series that will arrive on CBS All Access in May.

According to Variety, which first broke the news, Fuller is stepping down from his post, in order to focus on other commitments. He is currently involved with the reboot of "American Gods," which will air on Starz, and a revival of "Amazing Stories," set to air on NBC.

"Due to Bryan's other projects, he is no longer able to oversee the day-to-day of 'Star Trek,' but he remains an executive producer, and will continue to map out the story arc for the entire season...Bryan is a brilliant creative talent and passionate 'Star Trek' fan, who has helped us chart an exciting course for the series. We are all committed to seeing this vision through and look forward to premiering 'Star Trek: Discovery' this coming May 2017," CBS Television Studios said in a statement.

Despite Fuller's relinquishing of the role, CBS has maintained that he will still be heavily involved in the show's creative process. "Star Trek: Discovery" will continue with Fuller's vision and he will remain an executive producer. The same publication's sources have also said that Fuller and the network have disagreed on the pacing of the show's production. Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who are also executive producers, will be running the show.

In other news, THR has reported on the new characters that will be featured on the show. Apart from the new female captain of the ship, there will also be a female admiral, a male admiral, a male Klingon captain, a male adviser, a British male doctor, and an openly gay actor playing one of the male leads. The series will follow the crew as they journey through space on U.S.S. Discovery, formerly known as the Enterprise.
