"Star Wars" fans received quite a treat when a new teaser trailer premiered at the franchise's annual celebration event at Anaheim in California. Prior to that, director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy provided ample information regarding the next instalment of the Star Wars movie.

The highly anticipated trailer was immediately posted online on the franchise's official YouTube page and has so far garnered ample hits. The trailer opens with a shot of a destroyed Star Destroyer ship amidst a barren desert. Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker voices over, "The force is strong in my family. My father has it, I have it, my sister has it," and then adds, "You have that power, too." A shot of a battered Dark Vader's helmet is seen. Viewers can also glimpse the next villain of the movie: Kylo Ren, while he wields a broadsword lightsaber. The real treat comes at the end as fans see the first look of an aged Han Solo, played by actor Harrison Ford, and Chewbacca. Solo tells his companion, "Chewie, we're home" before the clip ends. But where is home?

Before the trailer premiered, producer Kathleen Kennedy promised strong female characters will be present in the Star Wars franchise. Mirror compiled a list of such female characters that are present in the Star Wars universe. These include Mon Mothma, who was a senator in Revenge of the Sith, Shmi Skywalker who was a slave on Tatooine and bid adieu to her ill-fated Jedi son and Celia Imrie, the first female rebel pilot in "The Phantom Menace".

Creator of the franchise, George Lucas, told E! News that he hasn't watched the new trailer for "Stars Wars 7: The Force Awakens" yet. He hopes they do a great job. Lucas directed four of the six previous films and sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.

"Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens" hits theatres on Dec. 18, 2015.
