Fans of the American teen-family drama television series "Switched at Birth" will have to permanently say good-bye to the show as it has been announced that it will run its final season. According to a report by Daily Excelsior, the series will end after season 5.

The news was announced by series creator and executive producer Lizzy Weiss via her Twitter account. She tweeted, "This season of #SwitchedatBirth will be our final one. We are ending the show after an amazing 103 episodes with pride, love, and gratitude."

Freeform (previously known as ABC Family) has also already confirmed the cancellation of the show. But they are not leaving fans hanging as they have prepared a total of 10 episodes with a special 90-minute finale. Bustle noted that episode 100 will be part of the final season.

Filming for the final season is still ongoing and it will end in April. The final season will air sometime in summer, but there is no specific date yet on when it might premiere. As for the reason of cancellation, Christian Today reported that the number of viewers of the series consistently declined, as presented in the data by TV Series Finale. The final episode of season 4 garnered only approximately 840,000 viewers.

Nonetheless, it is evident that "Switched at Birth" has captured the hearts of many. In fact, the drama series has won the prestigious honorary Peabody Award in year 2013. It was also renewed for a fifth run days before the fourth season aired its finale because of the different relatable and relevant issues it presented.

"Switched at Birth" is a story of two teenagers swapped in the hospital on the day they were born. It follows the lives of Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc) and the lives of their family and friends. The show also stars Sean Berdy, Lucas Grabeel, Constance Marie, Lea Thompson, and D.W. Moffett.
