'Switched at Birth' season 5 air date, spoilers: Theories on the call

(Facebook / Switched at Birth)The fifth and final season of "Switched at Birth" returns to Freeform in January 2017.

The long wait is nearing its end as the fifth and final season of "Switched at Birth" will finally air January 2017. The cliffhanger featured a time jump where Bay (Vanessa Marano) and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) are settled in another country. However, the phone rings and the other line seems to bring bad news.

There have been many speculations surrounding the reason for the call that would require Bay and Daphne to go home. The season will only consist of 10 episodes, which means that the events will unfold with a fast pace.

Two popular theories suggest that awful things are coming for John (D.W. Moffett). One theory states that he has suffered another heart attack and will either be dying or already dead. A more popular theory states that his marriage with Kathryn (Lea Thompson) is irreconcilable and they are headed for divorce.

Many fans also think that the call will be about their brother Toby (Lucas Grabeel) whose baby with Lily (Rachel Shenton) was diagnosed with Down Syndrome while still in the mother's womb. However, the two decided to keep the baby and Carlton was born in the finale of season 4.

It has been reported that the final episode of the show will feature a happy ending. Rumors of a new love for Bay, who will be introduced in the first episode, have been making the rounds. Daphne is believed to work things out with Mingo (Adam Hagenbuch).

Mingo was introduced in season 4 where he and Daphne started with a cat and dog kind of acquaintance. Their pairing was easily liked by the viewers and it did not take long for them to gain many shippers. He broke up with Daphne when the season ended, though, when he learned that she is still in contact with the guy she kissed.

It is going to be a bittersweet return for "Switched at Birth" when the long-awaited continuation of the story will start to air the beginning of the show's end.
