"Final Fantasy" game series designer Tetsuya Nomura was surprised to find out he will be directing—and in charge—of the next project from Square Enix, the "Final Fantasy 7" remake.

The news was a big shock to him when he saw the trailer of the remake during the PlayStation press conference at E3. "Mr. Hashimoto was involved with the advertising and marketing of the original, so like [Mr. Kitase and myself], VII has a strong place in his heart," Nomura explained during his interview with Japanese magazine Famitsu [via Kotaku].

"As preproduction went along and I offered my opinions on what I thought should be done, Mr. [Kitase, FFVII original director] would ask me how the individual elements should be adjusted in fine detail. It was very perplexing." Nomura also added "So I called up Mr. Kitase and said, 'It says that I'm the director for some reason.' To which he replied, 'Of course it does.'"

Tetsuya Nomura is currently part of the "Kingdom Hearts III" project and is working as the director so this is actually a bit surprising not just for him but for the fans too.

Nomura has been part of the game series' team since "Final Fantasy IV" came out. He started working on the project as a debugger and eventually became the graphic director for the sixth installment. Nomura got promoted to principal character designer for "Final Fantasy VII" and replaced former designer Yoshitaka Amano, as stated on his bio page.

So far, the only detail the company has released is the existence of the remake. Aside from the trailer featured during E3, no new information has been announced yet. The release date of the upcoming game, as well as the new features they will include are still also uncertain.

The upcoming "Final Fantasy 7" remake is set to be released on the PlayStation 4 platform.
