'The Elder Scrolls 6' release date: game confirmed but may not be in development just yet

(Bethesda)

"The Elder Scrolls 6" was not shown off at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) as some fans might have hoped for, and there may be a reason for that, with that being the game may not even be in development just yet.

Recently, Bethesda vice president for PR and marketing Pete Hines answered a few fan questions on Twitter regarding the eagerly anticipated, open world fantasy RPG.

First off, Hines replied to a question from Twitter user "@HotShame0" wondering about whether some other games may take some focus away from "The Elder Scrolls 6." Hines replied by simply stating that "we aren't working on TES6 at the moment."

A bit later, Hines responded to another fan query about the upcoming game, this one coming from user "@gabedn299," asking if there is currently a rough estimate for its release date. Hines answered the question by simply indicating that there is no current estimate for when the game might be released and that it may take "years and years."

Not long after those tweets began to become the topics of conversation for many "Elder Scrolls" fans, Hines issued a statement to PC Gamer clarifying exactly what those meant.

In the statement, Hines indicated that while game director Todd Howard did reveal that "The Elder Scrolls 6" would be made, it was not mentioned that it was already being developed.

What this means is that fans of the franchise may have to wait for a while before they can get their hands on the next "Elder Scrolls" game.

The long wait for the next installment of the fantasy RPG series may also be one of the reasons why Bethesda is releasing "Skyrim Special Edition," a remastered version of "The Elder Scrolls 5" that was initially made available back in 2011.

It looks like fans will be best served to settle in for a long wait as it looks like "The Elder Scrolls 6" may not be coming out anytime soon.
