'The Flash' season 3 premiere spoilers: What will happen to the Iris-Barry tandem?

(Facebook/CWTheFlash)Fans are still in shock over the finale's cliffhanger in "The Flash."

Season 2 of "The Flash" ended with a bang, when Barry (Grant Gustin) gave in to his personal desires and decided to erase the whole timeline by saving his mother. His choice shocked the viewers of the series, since it came after Iris' (Candice Patton) big confession.

The much-awaited admission that she loves Barry finally happened. It could not come at a worse time though since he was still reeling from his father's death. Zoom (guest star Teddy Sears) killed Henry (John Wesley Shipp) in front of the red speedster, at the exact place where his mother was murdered years ago. After that, Barry was forced to race for his life, and for the lives of the people on Earth-1, against the supervillain.

Barry won that race and defeated Zoom. He told Iris he was not ready to have another relationship and she understood. According to her, waiting would be nothing, considering how Barry suffered for a long time because of her.

Gustin told Comicbook that his character would be fine coming into season 3. He promised the fans that even though Barry was suffering from so many things during the finale, things would turn up okay in the end.

"We won't lose it. I will be adamant! I don't know what's going to happen in season 3, how they're going to write it, where they're going to go, but Berlanti and Kreisberg and Geoff – I actually don't know how closely Geoff's involved anymore – but all those guys know The Flash better than anybody, and they know that he has to have the optimism," the actor said.

Gustin's assurance may be enough to pacify the fans, but it still does not guarantee that Barry and Iris will become an item. After all, he erased the entire timeline when he changed history. The fate of everyone is still up in the air. It's possible that Iris' confession didn't happen at all. Will there even be a Team Flash in season 3?

"The Flash" season 3 will return this fall on the CW.
