'The Last of Us 2' release rumors: Game sequel to come out in 2021, to further explore Ellie's true sexuality

(Facebook/Naughty Dog LLC)Rumor has it that "The Last of Us 2" will arrive in 2021.

There is no denying that "The Last of Us 2" is one of the most-talked-about game sequels, although confirmation on the said game has yet to be made. However, the latest in the rumor mill is that the game may not be available earlier than 2021 as its production has been halted.

In his interview with The Frame last July, "The Last of Us" creative director and programmer Neil Druckmann revealed that they had already developed prototypes for "The Last of Us 2." However, the process was put into a halt after Naughty Dog, the studio behind the game, started the development of "Uncharted 4" downloadable content (DLC).

Because Naughty Dog's focus is on the said DLC, the latest in the rumor mill is that "The Last of Us 2" won't arrive in the market earlier than 2021. For one thing, it is expected that the DLC for "Unchartered 4" won't be finished earlier than 2017. As it was also revealed that it took Naughty Dog three years and a half to finish the current "The Last of Us" main game, hence, simple math will result in 2020 as the completion date of the game sequel, and it is likely for the game to be released in 2021.

Apart from the speculation on its 2021 release, there are also rumors saying that "The Last of Us 2" will usher in new characters. While fans are excited as to how these characters will influence the game, there is no denying that many are intrigued on how "The Last of Us 2" will further explore the true sexuality of Ellie, who, in its "Left Behind" DLC, is revealed as gay. After all, upon the revelation of the character's sexual preference, many "The Last of Us" gamers have claimed that they have been empowered.

"A lot of people have come to the actress who plays Ellie, Ashley Johnson, and have told her playing that game and having Ellie as this role model gave them the strength to come out to their friends," Druckman said.
