Although Naughty Dog has yet to resume working on "The Last of Us 2," it is now rumored that the upcoming game sequel will no longer follow the lives and adventures of Ellie and Joel and will instead feature characters who exist in a world parallel to that of the two "The Last of Us" characters.

There is no denying that "The Last of Us 2" is one of the most-clamored-for game sequels. After all, the zombie-post-apocalyptic game does not only have an interesting gameplay but boasts of an engaging storyline, too. While there is nothing certain about the status of the game yet, fans are happy to know, at least, that Naughty Dog has plans for a sequel.

Neil Druckmann, director and writer of "The Last of Us," has previously revealed that they have already started working on the prototype of the game sequel. However, the process was put into a halt after the studio began working on the upcoming DLC for its recently released game, "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End." Hence, it is suspected that the development of "The Last of Us 2" will only resume once the DLC for the said game is out. Nonetheless, as Druckmann himself revealed in an interview with The Frame that it took the studio more than three years to complete, it is alleged that "The Last of Us 2" won't arrive earlier than 2021.

However, even the game sequel's official development has yet to kick off, there are already rumors claiming that it will feature a new set of characters who exist in a parallel world to that of Ellie and Joel. With this, it is now suspected that "The Last of Us" may be devoid of the presence of the two characters who have endeared themselves to the game's players.

While this may be alarming to the avid fans of the two characters, without any official word from Naughty Dog and Druckmann, nothing can really be confirmed at this point, and there is still a good chance for Ellie and Joel to be the focal characters of "The Last of Us 2."
