'The Man in the High Castle' season 3 news, air date: Amazon renews series with new showrunner

(Facebook/HighCastleAmazon)Amazon Studios has renewed "The Man in the High Castle" for a third season.

Amazon Studios has officially renewed "The Man in the High Castle" for a third season. This time, it will run with a proper showrunner — Eric Overmyer.

Overmyer, known for his works on "Treme" and "The Affair," will also work as an executive producer for the series' third season. "The Man in the High Castle" suffered a production bump in season 2 when Frank Spotnitz, who has been showrunner since season 1, departed from the series because of conflicts with Amazon Studios. Executive producers David Zucker and Isa Dick Hackett picked up from where Spotnitz left off, which was about halfway through the second season.

"We intend to have in Season 3 a proper showrunner again. A proper showrunner, a proper writer-producer that we would work with an in support of," Zucker said.

Thankfully, Zucker's wishes have come true. And while Overmyer will take over season 3, it has yet to be revealed what the forthcoming season will have in store for viewers. The second season, which was released on Dec. 16, left a number of lingering questions.

According to Inverse, there are seven things that season 3 needs to expound on or answer. First of all, there is the issue of Frank's survival. Portrayed by Rupert Evans, Frank's fate remains up in the air since it wasn't shown whether he got out of the explosion alive. And then there's Childan (Brennan Brown) and Ed (DJ Qualls), who were last seen heading to the Neutral Zone as the bomb detonated. What story could be waiting for them when they arrive?

Another surprising twist that was revealed in season 2 was Trudy (Conor Leslie), who was initially thought to be dead, alive, and working for Abendsen — the titular Man in the High Castle. Trudy, the sister of Juliana (Alexa Davalos), was executed in the first episode of season 1. So how exactly is she alive?

"The Man in the High Castle" season 3 is set to be released in 2017.
