'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 spoilers: return of familiar faces

(The Vampire Diaries / Facebook)Is Elena returning for "The Vampire Diaries" season eight?

As fans wait for the eighth and final season of "The Vampire Diaries," Julie Plec has confirmed that she is planning to bring back familiar faces for the series' finale.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the EP said: "This year is about delivering on eight seasons worth of passion and enthusiasm for these characters and I would be really disappointed not to be able to show off all their faces one last time." She further explained that she wants to see the face of everyone "that I can possibly see again," whether the characters are depicted during the series finale or they are remembered through flashbacks. After all, Mystic Falls is a place that the beloved characters will always call their home.

Could this mean that Nina Dobrev will return to reprise her role as Elena? This has yet to be confirmed but there are already a lot of fans who are looking forward to her big comeback by the end of the series.

As fans know, Kai (Chris Wood) put Elena into a deep sleep that could last for over 60 years. Her life is also linked to Bonnie's (Kat Graham). If Bonnie dies, then Elena will live. However, a sudden major character death may not play too well for "The Vampire Diaries" season eight, considering that it will be the final installment.

If Elena returns, the only way to insert a good storyline for her is for the plot to depict a flash-forward of many years. This way, Elena can return safely and Bonnie doesn't have to die. Bonnie is also a fan favorite and taking her out or sacrificing her life to bring Elena back may not be the best idea for viewership appeal.

There are a lot of good things to look forward to when the show returns, but a Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena reunion is by far the most talked-about in online forums and social media platforms.

Will Elena return? Does Bonnie have to die so Elena can awaken from her slumber?

"The Vampire Diaries" premieres October 21 on The CW.
