'The Walking Dead's' zombies on a plane special coming; character that survives will feature in 'Fear the Walking Dead'

Robert Kirkman and Greg Nicotero have been very creative in where they put their zombies. Some of the more memorable ones were the zombie in the well, the napalmed zombies and Michonne's pets. Now, the geniuses behind the popular zombie show are putting zombies on a plane.

While it might sound so farfetched, AMC is reportedly gearing up for an unusual, groundbreaking special that is rumored to be set during the time period of "The Walking Dead's" companion series, "Fear the Walking Dead."

According to EW, AMC is coming up with a 30-minute, stand-alone special that will follow the tale of what might be the unluckiest airplane passengers in the world, as they face a walker attack while in flight. One character will allegedly survive this horror and will eventually join the cast of "Fear the Walking Dead" next season.

The network used to have stand-alone webisodes for "The Walking Dead" but it never used the medium to introduce a new character for the show. The zombies on a plane story line will reportedly make its debut online and the ensuing chapters will be shown in between telecasts of the "The Walking Dead." In essence, fans watching "The Walking Dead" will be treated to a chapter of the new drama in between commercial breaks.

Aside from that rudimentary explanation, no other details have been released. No one knows what the new stand-alone special will be called, who the new character is and who will portray him or her. Some fans have already assumed that the said flight is headed to Los Angeles where "Fear the Walking Dead" is based.

To be fair, the idea of zombies on a plane isn't new. Brad Pitt's "World War Z" showed how quickly everything would fall apart if just one person becomes infected with zombie-itis. But viewers and zombie fans are undoubtedly curious on how the "The Walking Dead's" team will handle this premise.

The stand-alone is set to be produced by Dave Erickson and "Fear the Walking Dead's" showrunner, David Weiner.

"The Walking Dead's" companion series recently made history when it premiered to an astounding 13.3 million viewers, garnering the record of biggest cable debut of a series ever.

Meanwhile, Rick Grimes and the rest of "The Walking Dead" will return on Oct. 11, 2015.
