'The Winds of Winter' release date, news: more unexpected deaths in upcoming novel?

George R.R. Martin has become one of the household names in the industry of novel writing. And while fans continue to wait for the release of "The Winds of Winter," the famous author has reportedly revealed a few details of the events that will take place in the upcoming novel.

According to Game N Guide, Martin dropped a few hints during the Balticon 2016 convention, wherein he was the guest of honor. Aside from stating that fans will get to see more of Mercy, Arya Starks' alter ego, he also read a few excerpts from a chapter of "The Winds of Winter."

Since Martin has been known to kill off some beloved characters in his books, it is expected that readers will once again have their hearts broken as shocking deaths will occur in the upcoming novel.

During the Maryland Regional Science Fiction and Fantasy Convention held May 27-30, 2016, Martin reportedly explained some more of the deaths that happen in his novels.

Previously, Martin also discussed the deaths in his books while doing an interview with Joy Ward of Galaxy's Edge Magazine. "That's such a cheat. It doesn't happen that way. They go into battle and their best friend dies or they get horribly wounded. They lose their leg or death comes at them unexpectedly," he said, referring to the killings of many characters.

Meanwhile, the book's release date is still hazy and though Martin has asked for the understanding of fans earlier this year, some are getting worried that he may not be able to complete the story before the year ends.

"The Winds of Winter" has been delayed numerous times and despite the release of HBO's "Game of Thrones" season six, Martin has not released the novel yet.

Earlier this month, the 67-year-old writer gave fans a taste of the sequel to "A Song of Ice and Fire." In his blog, he mentioned a few characters and told his avid readers to wait for the rest of the chapters.

The characters he mentioned are as follows: Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, and Darkstar. He then provided a link to an excerpt from "The Winds of Winter" where fans can get a first look at one of the chapters.
