Times Square: One of nine major cultural attractions

Times Square in New York City topped the list of major cultural attractions for tourists around the world.

Times Square is New York City's major commercial intersection. Iconized as The Crossroads of the World and The Center of the Universe, Times Square is one of many places that make New York a city that never sleeps. It is known to house many Broadway theatres, cinemas and electronic billboards.

Times Square is one of the must-visit destinations of every first time visitor in New York. Many visit Times Square primarily for its different ambiance and spectacular billboards. Foodies around the world also visit this place for its more than 100 restaurants. It also the Headquarters of many offices like MTV and ABC's 'Good Morning America,' that broadcasts in front of a live audience.

From having been a busy and large traffic intersection, Times Square is now being redeveloped into a pedestrian-friendly and car-free place. The redevelopment project known worldwide as 'The Times Square Transformation' started in 2012, and is expected be finished by 2016. The project's main goal is to ensure that Times Square is designed to reflect its bold, cutting-edge spirit. The re-development was designed by Snohetta, with consultation by the Times Square Alliance and the Department of Transportation.

Alongside Times Square, other cultural destinations that tops the list are the Niagara Falls in North America, the Eiffel Tower, the Musee du Louvre, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Taj Mahal Mausoleum in Agra, India, the Empire State Building, the British Museum in London, the Coliseum in Italy, and the Grand Canyon National Park.
