Toyota JDM Crown gets sophisticated makeover for 60th birthday

Toyota has given the 14th generation JDM Crown a mid-cycle update to commemorate its 60th birthday. The luxury sedan was first introduced in 1955 and is the longest running car nameplate in Toyota's history. Despite its age, the Crown sedan has been able to adapt to the changing times and remain current.

According to Toyota's press release, the mid-cycle redesign is "focused on injecting liveliness and fun into the Crown, with particular emphasis placed in style, customization and performance."

The Crown's Athlete and Royal trim levels have received the most improvements, but the Majesta trim also gets a few key upgrades.

The Crown Athlete gets a new mesh grille that gives off a commanding presence. The strong looking grille extends to the bottom edge of the bumper, which highlights the sedan's wide and low stance. It also gets Bi-Beam LED headlights and larger ring-shaped rear lamps.

The Crown Royal, on the other hand, features a thick and horizontal chrome grille that also exudes a commanding and sophisticated new look. The grille has also been lowered and extends to both sides of the sedan, encircling the new fog lights. Inside, the interior features a wood-trimmed design.

The Crown sedan also gets new exterior colors that can be combined with three new interior colors: white, black and gold.

The mid-cycle update also introduces a new 2.0-liter direct-injected twin-scroll turbocharged engine with adaptive cooling and intelligent valve timing. The engine achieves outstanding acceleration performance even at low or medium speeds.

The JDM Crown also gets new tech features including the ITS Connect, the "world-first ITS safety package." Using a dedicated ITS frequency, the sedan can share data with infrastructures and other vehicles. Through the ITS frequency, it can transmit right-turn collision caution, red light caution and signal change advisory to infrastructures. It can also transmit to other vehicles for communicating radar cruise control and emergency vehicle notification. Other safety features include blind spot monitor and intelligent parking assist.
