'True Detective' season 3 happening or not? what to expect

(Facebook / True Detective)"True Detective" season 3 may not be happening as suggested by a recent ad shown by HBO.

"True Detective" season 2 did not rate as well as season 1, but earlier reports have claimed that HBO will still push for a third season. However, a recently aired ad suggests that a follow-up season has been canceled.

Despite unfavorable feedbacks, HBO president Michael Lombardo has expressed support for another season of "True Detective" at last year's Television Critics Association press tour. Addressing dissatisfaction for then airing second season, he said, "I think you need to watch the entirety of it … I think it's enormously satisfying." He also described show creator Nic Pizzolatto as a bold storyteller, and said, "I think he takes risks in how he lays out a story, in the pacing of stories. And I think it pays off in this particular season."

Perhaps to reiterate his support and trust in Pizzolatto and the series, he shared, "If he wanted to do another season, I told him our door is open. I'd love to do another season with him. I think he's an enormously talented writer, and I have already called him and said, 'Nic, if you want to do a season 3, let's start talking.'"

Unlike most series, "True Detective" seasons 1 2 are different narratives. This means that each season is a standalone story so the finale does not lead to another season. Both seasons have eight episodes each and feature different cast members.

While viewers wait for an official announcement from HBO and Pizzolatto, reports reveal a possible clue to the series' standing on an ad that aired during the premiere of "Game of Thrones." The ad was a list of shows available for streaming and those that have been renewed and/or are currently airing are listed with "all episodes."

"True Detective" was labeled as a "complete series," which could mean there are no more upcoming seasons.
