"True Detective" director Nic Pizzolatto can still do a third season of the anthology crime drama if he wants to, since HBO president Michael Lombardo already approves of it. However, there is really no official announcement from the network about a season 3 of the show.

Regular viewers and fans of the show openly expressed season 1 of "True Detective" over season 2 as their preferred season. The Pizzolatto-directed season 2 has received negative reviews and feedback than the one Cary Fukunaga did. Despite this, Lombardo would still approve of Pizzolatto's direction if he still wants to continue directing the show.

Lombardo said at the TCA press event last year, "I told [Pizzolatto] our door is open. I'd love to do another season with him...I think he's an enormously talented writer, and I have already called him and said, 'Nic, if you want to do a Season 3, let's start talking.'"

If Pizzolatto accepts the offer, fans hope to see a better season than the one he created. It is also likely that he will take over the third season since HBO has reportedly extended his contract up to 2018.

Steve Golin, head of Production Company Anonymous Content, said that their client show's newer scripts weren't as good. "Sometimes you have a good [season], sometimes you don't. But Nic is wildly talented, but I think that this one just wasn't as good ... Now we're gonna do season 3 and I think that one will be better," he added.

Meanwhile, in the rumor mill, "Pacific Rim" star Idris Elba could be added in the roster of "True Detective's" star-studded cast. The Huff Post Entertainment asked him about a possible involvement in the show, and Elba quipped, "I like the way you are thinking."

Because "True Detective" is known to change its cast every season, it is possible to see new faces — even A-lister stars — to grace the upcoming season 3, including Elba.
