The United Church of Canada's moderator expressed shock and sorrow after shooting which left one person dead in Montreal at the victory party celebrating the Parti Québécois election win in the Quebec election.

The shooting, which left one person dead, came as suspect Richard Henry Bain, 62, from La Concepttion, Quebec was set to be charged in the killing of Denis Blanchette, 48, a stagehand at the Metropolis theater in the city's downtown area.

Police said Blanchette was the father of an eight year-old girl, according to CBC News.

The Right Rev. Gary Paterson extended "deep sympathy" to victims of the shooting and to their families and friends on Wednesday.
"Acts of violence such as this one are very troubling and disturbing, both for those who were present and for all of us in society who bear witness to this tragedy," Paterson said in a statement.

The church said in a statement Rev. Paterson and members of the UCC will be holding victims in their prayers.
