'Watch Dogs 2' release date: sequel to feature 'new tone,' 'innovative' gameplay

(Ubisoft)

New details about what "Watch Dogs 2" may ultimately be like have just been revealed.

Recently, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot talked briefly about the upcoming sequel during an earnings call.

Gamespot was able to share some of Guillemot's more interesting comments about the game.

One of the things that Guillemot revealed about the upcoming game is that it will feature a "new tone." Exactly what that means remains unclear, though it could be a reference to the overall feel that the new game may feature upon making its debut.

On top of that, Guillemot also mentioned that "Watch Dogs 2" will feature "innovative" gameplay, though again, the Ubisoft CEO did not elaborate on this.

Considering that the original "Watch Dogs" game already featured some unique gameplay elements, it will be interesting to see what kind of potential changes or perhaps improvements may be introduced in the sequel.

Guillemot's comments were not the only sources of big news regarding the sequel that have popped up recently.

Earlier this month, a picture that came courtesy of Instagram user "TheKingCort" seemingly showed off what the new protagonist would look like. The Instagram account has since been made private, though fans who may have missed the picture can still view it via this tweet from @Nerd_Leaks.

The image seems to show a different protagonist from the one who appeared in the first "Watch Dogs" game, though it's still unclear if the character featured in the picture will actually be the new series lead.

Another rumor from earlier this year, coming courtesy of Kotaku, also hinted at a possible setting for the sequel. According to sources spoken to by Kotaku, the upcoming game may be set in San Francisco, though this has not been confirmed.

No specific release date has been announced for "Watch Dogs 2," though it is expected to arrive prior to April 2017.
