A few days after its announcement, the Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 (General Distribution Release 1) update is already on its way for consumer release, and is reportedly being tested by manufacturers in various devices.

Before the information was pulled out from Microsoft's website, Nokia Power User was able to capture that the Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update will bring folder support on the start menu, and will feature support for Voice over LTE/4G – the latest in mobile voice communication technology.

With this development, users will be able to drop tiles over other tiles and create a folder – a feature that iOS users are familiar with.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 for mobile devices has just launched, and many believe that the operating system can give Apple iOS and Google's Android a run for their money.

There are a number of exciting things that the Windows Phone 8.1 update presents, Cortana being one of the most talked about.

"The most personal smartphone assistant," as stated on the official website, the proactive Cortana tramples iPhone's Siri in a new Microsoft ad.

Aside from the digital assistant, the Windows Phone 8.1 update also brings Xbox into the users' pocket with a built-in Xbox Live that gets players and owners connected to gaming achievements, friends and multiplayer action.

Ecumenical News recently reported that Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first smartphone to carry the Windows 8.1 update.

However, The Verge has sources claiming that Microsoft will unveil two new Windows Phone 8.1 devices and that teasers were shown in an internal company meeting, headed by devices chief Stephen Elop.

The first smartphone is codenamed "Superman" and is said to be a "selfie phone" boasting a 5MP front-facing camera and 4.7-inch display screen.

The second smartphone is codenamed "Tesla" and is dubbed as an "affordable high-end phone" equipped with PureView camera and is expected to replace Nokia Lumia 720.

Microsoft is also apparently terminating Nokia Android phones to exclusively adopt the Windows Phone OS in the future.
