Wove Band makes flexible wearables a reality

There is a new type of wearable in town and it is the Wove Band which, as its name indicates, is a band with a huge screen that wraps around the wrist. However, in spite of its name and its appearance, the wearable basically functions as a smartwatch and displays the time without ever turning off.

As the Wove Band was revealed by its manufacturer Polyera, its CEO Phil Inagaki was quick to state to Wired that it is not a smartwatch, and instead described it as "Digital Canvas" that is six times bigger than the Apple Watch and one that could be bent in many ways. The Wove Band is created from Digital Fabric that has been manufactured by Polyera and if all goes as planned, the wearable will be available in the market sometime next year.

Flexible displays are slowly increasing in number, and some have even been used in smartphones like the Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge , but these cannot bend fully and only their edges are slightly curved. There have also been some smartwatches like the Galaxy Gear S that have a slightly curved display but again, it is in the form of a rigid arc that cannot be manipulated by the user. However, with the Wove Band, all that changes and Inagaki was quick to point out that they do not want to create a smartwatch or even a fitness tracker but something that would operate like a smartphone on the wearer's wrist.

The Digital Fabric technology created by Polyera makes the Wove Band possible and at its heart is a Thin-Film Transistor that is flexible and it is used to fashion the e-ink display on the device. However, the resolution of the screen is only 1040 x 200 pixels and the batteries lie near the clasps that are used to pull the band together.

As for the sensors onboard, they include a standard 9-axis motion sensor, which is found on several smartwatches, and also haptics feedback, while the hardware includes a processor clocked at 1 GHz and 4 GB storage.
