'Criminal Minds' season 12 spoilers: Reid's fate remains dim

(cbs.com/shows/criminal_minds)More trouble awaits Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) on the next episode of "Criminal Minds" season 12.

Spencer Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) will be in for another tricky situation in episode 14 of "Criminal Minds" season 12.

In the previous episode, Reid found himself detained in a Mexican prison after he was charged with murder and drug possession. His colleagues from the BAU tried to assist him during the investigation wih the help of several International Response Team members, Clara Seger (Alana de la Garza) and Matt Simmons (Daniel Henney), from the spin-off "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders."

With Clara and Matt's help, Reid's teammates learned that the drugs that he wants to bring home to the US to help treat his mother, Diana (Jane Lynch), do not contain any illegal ingredients. This helped them drop the drug possession charges filed against him. They also learned that the victim who Reid allegedly killed had dual citizenship, which means that he can be brought back to the US for trial.

But since Reid's recollection of the events was foggy, and he admitted that his trip to Mexico was not an official business, the BAU agents must work on their own to prove his innocence against the murder raps charged against him.

Reid's situation will remain tricky in the upcoming episode called "Collision Course." According to its synopsis, more bad news will affect Reid, while he remains under investigation.

When asked if Reid will remain under custody in the upcoming episode, showrunner Erica Messer opted not to divulge more information about the plot during her interview with TV Guide.

"The big question in next week's episode is, will he plead guilty or not guilty, and what would that mean? Will he be out on bail until there's a trial?" Messer stated. "I don't wanna tease what even happens there because it's such a strong episode and it's such an interesting moral dilemma."

It was also revealed that the upcoming episode will feature a new challenge for the members of the BAU who will also deal with a new case after a number of fatal car crashes involving pedestrians and drivers had been reported. The team will try to find out if there is something behind the incident.

CBS will air the next episode of "Criminal Minds" season 12 on Wednesday, Feb. 22.
