According to Entertainment Weekly, this year's Christmas special will be titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." As revealed in the poster, the titular character will be teaming up with a masked superhero in an epic New York adventure. When brain-swapping aliens express their desire to attack Manhattan, the Doctor and Nardole (Matt Lucas) will be joining forces with an investigative reporter and an unknown character who is so far known as The Ghost.

It's been a year since fans of the show saw Capaldi as the twelfth Doctor. He also starred in the Christmas episode last year titled "The Husbands of River Song."

Reports say that the upcoming special might be a sequel to last year's episode. The Verge pointed out that Capaldi and Lucas' reappearance at this year's Christmas special might just be a sign of such continuity between episodes. Other familiar villains are also expected to make a comeback in "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." Some even say that the brain-swapping aliens have quite the resemblance with the Shoal of the Winter Harmony, which is an antagonistic humanoid race that also appeared in "The Husbands of River Song."

Executive producer Steven Moffat and co-stars Justin Chatwin and Charity Wakefield worked together to create "The Return of Doctor Mysterio."

Fans were a bit disappointed with the tone that was set in the previous Christmas special, but are hopeful that this year's will do some justice. Fans are hoping that this year's episode will set the hype for the 10th series of "Doctor Who," which is expected to air in April 2017.

"The Return of Doctor Mysterio" will premiere on BBC America on Dec. 25 at 9 p.m. ET. A "Doctor Who" marathon is expected to air in the days leading up to the Christmas special.
