A meteor or meteors exploded over Central Russia on Friday morning, creating a loud sonic blast and sending widespread shockwaves that knocked out windows and glass. The phenomenon has left about 1,100 people injured, many of them hurt by the shattered glass.

The hurling meteor entered the earth's atmosphere at a speed of at least 33,000 mph, exploding between 18 to 32 miles above the ground, the Russian Academy of Sciences said. Weighing at around 10 tons, it is the largest meteor to crash into earth since 1908.

"The movement of fragments at large speed caused a powerful emission of light and a strong shock wave," the academy said in a statement.

Witnesses provided amateur video showing the meteor streaking across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains and mainly over Chelyabinsk, Russia. After it created a sonic boom from entering the earth's atmosphere, it burst into fireball.

The Emergency Situations Ministry reported around 3,000 buildings were damaged by the explosion.

Scientists say that the meteor that hurled across Russia on Friday was unrelated to asteroid 2012 DA14, a 130,000-ton asteroid that flew about 17,200 miles from Earth on Friday.
