'Sherlock' season 4 release date, news: Series debuts odd new teaser trailer

(Facebook/Sherlock.BBCW)"Sherlock" season 4 will premiere on New Year's Day, Jan. 1, 2017.

"Sherlock" fans recently got treated to a new teaser. And although it doesn't offer much, it does manage to stir exciting emotions in every fan as the release date of season 4 slowly draws near.

The official YouTube channel of the BBC series released a 15-second teaser clip that features the crime-solving dynamic duo: Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as John Watson.

The two are seen sitting in their usual chairs at the apartment located on 221B Baker Street. Neither of them move or say anything throughout the duration of the video, but it does offer up a rather strange look at the apartment — it seems to be flooded. It definitely looks as if something shook the place as clutter floats in the water, including Sherlock's violin. The two men remain still, not even slightly bothered that the place is an unruly mess.

Simply titled "It's Not A Game Anymore," the teaser trailer does not really explain what happened prior to the scene or anything else for that matter. And the mysterious clip just ends by fading to black, which is followed by the series' title plastered against the background. The same video was also posted on the series' official Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The series is certainly gearing up for its January premiere, having previously released first-look images, which include the upcoming season's main villain, Culverton Smith, played by Toby Jones. The six photos also include a new addition to the Watson family — a little baby. One photo sees Sherlock looking at John and Mary's child the only way one would expect of him.

And while season 4, which consists of three episodes, is scheduled to debut on New Year's Day, there's also the question of what's next for the BBC series. Frankly, it remains to be seen if a fifth season is at all possible, but Cumberbatch figures that there may be a break after season 4.

"Sherlock" returns to television on Jan. 1, 2017 on PBS Masterpiece.
