Owners of Sony Xperia Z can now upgrade their handsets to Marshmallow 6.0.1 through AOSP custom firmware. Although Xperia Z was excluded from the original Marshmallow, they now have access to the Marshmallow 6.0.1 software upgrade with various features.

Although the upgrade is not the original, it has its own unique features. Since it is still in its beta stage, there are some features that might not work well. The developers, however, assure people that it is as smooth and reliable as the original.

Developers advise Xperia Z users to root their phone first, install a custom recovery, and back up the phone's current setting before downloading the software. For the steps on how to install the update, the developers have provided a step-by-step guideline to ensure that smooth installation process.

Sony announced earlier that the Marshmallow 6.0 update is available to the Sony Xperia Z3 series, Xperia Z3 devices, and the Xperia Z4 tablet. Those who own the Xperia Z4 and Z5 compact devices have already received the update while those who own the bigger Z5 Premium will have it soon.

The Xperia Blog has announced that the beta version of the firmware has also been rolled out to selected Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z2 owners. The beta testing has already been in progress in the UK, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Lithuania, Germany, Latvia, Italy, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, and Estonia.

After the installation, users should receive the build number, 23.5.A.0.486. Aside from improving the battery life, the Marshmallow update will also bring app enhancements to the camera as well as the Xperia Launcher.

There will also be some enhancements in some icons, as well as improvements in the copy-paste features of the phone.

Google advises Sony Xperia Z series users to store their passwords in Chrome to enable them to go real-time.
