'The Vampire Diaries' season 8: Fans want Nina Dobrev to have more scenes with Ian Somerhalder as Elena or Katherine

(Facebook/The Vampire Diaries)Fans have been clamoring for more of Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder scenes when the latter returns to "The Vampire Diaries."

After Nina Dobrev's (Elena Gilbert/Katherine Pierce) voice was teased in the season 7 finale of "The Vampire Diaries," avid fans of Dobrev's on-screen love team-up with Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) have been clamoring to bring back the once real-life lovebirds to the small screen, no matter what Dobrev's role may be.

In an interview with TV Line, "The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec has already assured the fans of the show that Dobrev will be back for the finale of the series. However, there are still many questions attached to Dobrev's return on "The Vampire Diaries." For one thing, fans wonder who among her two characters she should portray. Should she be Elena Gilbert, who was Damon Salvatore's love interest then, or Katherine Pierce, her doppelganger?

However, according to Celebrity Dirty Laundry, fans these days don't really care whether Dobrev will be back as Elena Gilbert or Katherine Pierce on "The Vampire Diaries;" what matters most to them is that Dobrev and Somerhalder share the frame in their scenes. According to the entertainment-gossip website, though, it would be uncomfortable for Dobrev and Somerhalder to work together as Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore as they were lovers in the series and are likely to have steamy love scenes. Should this be the case, it would really make Somerhalder's real-life wife, actress Nikki Reed, uncomfortable.

Dobrev left "The Vampire Diaries" at the end of its season 6, reportedly, because of the falling out of her off-screen romantic relationship with Somerhalder. On the other hand, Somerhalder has already announced that he is leaving the series after its upcoming season 8. If Dobrev comes back to the series and portrays Elena Gilbert anew, and the ratings of the show improve, fans can only wonder if the ex-lovers would reconsider their decision of bowing out of the show, in order to save it from getting axed.

If the answer to the question is to be based on Plec's TV Line interview, the answer seems to be a no, at least, for the part of Dobrev.

"Obviously things can change throughout time, if the show goes on longer than we expect it to, or if we all collectively decide it would be fun to bring her back earlier, and she wanted to. But in my opinion, she was very clear about what she wanted the next step in her life to be, and she's doing a great job of achieving that. So I'm sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end," said Plec.

Will Dobrev return as Elena or Katherine? Will the series' upcoming season be its last? Find out when "The Vampire Diaries" returns to The CW for its season 8 on Oct. 21.
