Galaxy S6 Active vs DROID Maxx 2: device from Motorola is cheaper, but not as sturdy as its competitor

With the Galaxy S6 Active being released by Samsung for adventure lovers and those who keep getting their smartphones wet, it is clear that there is a demand for such devices; however, a number of other offerings exist in the space and one such is the Motorola DROID Maxx 2. Here is how these two smartphones fare in a comparison.

Design

Comparing the design, it is hard to call a winner as both these1 devices have a lot of plastic onboard. However, the Maxx 2 has a metal rim that gives it a bit of class and its back panel is made from soft grip material. It can also be customized on the Moto Maker website where alternate back panels and accents can be chosen by the customer. However it does not have a fingerprint scanner and it is also missing on its competitor. As for the Galaxy S6 Active, its body is made entirely of hard and soft plastic and its rim has rubber padding. This build makes it resistant to vibration and it is also thermal shock proof with a MIL-STD-810G military certification; additionally, it has an IP68 certification and is also water and dust proof. Coming to colors, the device comes in plain gray or a camouflaged blue or gray. Meanwhile, the Maxx 2 has an IP52 certification and comes with a coating that repels water.

Display

The DROID Maxx 2 is the bigger device and it has a LCD screen that measures 5.5 inches and has a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and density of 403 pixels per inch. On the Galaxy S6 Active is a super AMOLED screen measuring 5.1 inches with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and density of 576 pixels per inch.

Specs

Here the Exynos 7420 chipset on the S6 Active gives it an edge in terms of speed and it is coupled with an octa-core CPU and a Mali-T760 GPU. On the Maxx 2 is an older Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, and it is coupled with an octa-core GPU and an Adreno 405 GPU.

Memory

There is no memory card slot on the S6 Active while the Maxx 2 supports up to 128 GB of external storage. As for the RAM, the device from Samsung is ahead with 3 GB and its competitor has 2 GB.

Price

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is priced at $199 with a two year contract, and the DROID Maxx 2 from Verizon costs $384 unlocked.
