"How to Train Your Dragon 3" is slated to release in 2018, which would mean it's still a long wait for Toothless and Hiccup's fans. However, that doesn't stop rumors from spreading, especially about the plot of the sequel.

Various media outlets have reported that the third movie will feature the separation of humans and dragons, which would also mean an emotional journey for Hiccup and his dragon best friend. Given that "How to Train Your Dragon 3" is assumed to be the last of the movie franchise, it is expected that there will be some tears shed.

The "How to Train Your Dragon" series is based on the books by Cressida Cowell, and according to director Dean DeBlois in an earlier interview with Collider, the third movie installment will feature the beginning story found in the books. The movie is set at a time where Hiccup looks back to the days when dragons existed, which could only mean that Hiccup and Toothless will indeed part ways and dragons will no longer be in the picture. The mystery now is why the dragons disappeared and if they will come back.

Also of note is how Hiccup is expected to be all grown-up as the movie director revealed that he is now the chief of his tribe. The same goes for Toothless and both species will do what's best for their kind. By this time, Hiccup learns how to decide things by himself.

"How to Train Your Dragon" initially experienced some delays on its release date. The animated film was originally set to release the same time as "Finding Dory," which started showing in U.S. movie theaters on June 17, but it obviously didn't. The change in schedule is reportedly due to the strategy of the production to ensure that the movie fares well in the competitive industry. Ecumenical News recently reported that the change in release date may also be beneficial to the film distributor considering that it's the last installment in the series and it needs to be a huge success.

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" is scheduled to release in U.S. movie theaters on May 18, 2018.
