iMac 2016 release date, specs rumors: Apple to release refreshed version of iMac together with iPhone 7 this year?

(www.apple.com)iMac is rumored to be released alongside iPhone 7 this year.

Apple's all-in-one desktop computer, the iMac, is rumored to get a refreshed version which should be released this year.

iMac received its latest update back in October 2015 when Apple added a new feature to it, the Retina 5K display. Soon after, fans started to wonder when the next version of iMac would be released. Apple has already hosted two events this year but there was no announcement regarding a new iMac.

MacWorld, however, reports that the iMac 2016 will soon be released alongside the new iPhone 7, which is rumored to be in September. It was also noted that Apple might host a separate event dedicated to the unveiling of a new iMac. It's also possible that the Cupertino tech giant will launch the new all-in-one desktop with other Apple devices set to be introduced before the year ends.

This is still part of the rumor mill as Apple has yet to make an official announcement.

Also included in the rumor mill are the specs of the new iMac. According to the same report, the iMac 2016 is expected to carry an Intel-based chipset with the possibility of a switch to AMD. The next desktop could carry an AMD Zen chipset, which could make it a considerably powerful machine. This chipset will reportedly be part of high-end models of the iMac or offered as an option should a user wish to upgrade.

Then again, it's also possible that the iMac will run on a Kaby Lake chipset, which is rumored to become available before 2016 ends. Otherwise, Apple may go for Cannonlake, which will reportedly be ready by 2017, which could also mean that iMac's release will be in that same year.

Apple's next desktop computer might also carry an AMD Polaris set for its graphics processing unit (GPU). AMD Polaris was announced at the beginning of this year. If Apple will use this GPU, there's a chance that the new iMac can also support a Virtual Reality feature.

Given all these speculations about the under-the-hood specs of iMac, the device is now being compared to Microsoft's rumored Surface AIO (all-in-one PC).
