Liquid metal Turing smartphone tougher than titanium and security tight
Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) has unveiled a smartphone that is not only the most durable one on the planet, but can also keep a user's personal information private and prevent it from getting into the wrong hands.
Dubbed the first ever liquid metal phone, the San Francisco-based company's Turing Phone is molded from a single slab of liquid morphium, an alloy made up of zirconium, copper, aluminum, nickel and silver. Morphium has an atomic structure that is more similar to that of glass instead of aluminum or steel, but is much stronger than both the metals, and also has some elements of ceramic and aluminum. Being tougher than titanium as well as steel, the material is more resistant to shock and screen breakages, and can easily protect the device from drops and scratches.
The key feature of the Turing Phone is what TRI calls a "decentralized authentication technology," which allows the smartphone to directly verify the identity of other Turing devices and exchange information securely without relying on verification from a third party, such as Apple or Google devices that issue security certificates from online servers. According to Turing, this authentication method creates a protected network that is "entirely insulated from cyber-threats and privacy intrusions".
The Turing Imitation Key security chip inside the smartphone authenticates encryption locally, keeping it always offline and out of the reach of hackers, unlike third-party services, but allows exchange of encrypted data only between Turing Phone owners. This means that Turing Phone users can exchange sensitive information, such as social security numbers and bank account details, without worrying about the information falling in the wrong hands.
The Turing Phone sports a 5.5-inch 1080p HD display and is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, along with 3GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, a 13-megapixel camera, an 8-megapixel selfie snapper, and a 3,000 mAh battery. A fingerprint sensor for unlocking the phone is featured on the side of the device, accompanied by a magnetic charger on the bottom.
The Turing Phone will go on sale from August 10 at a price of $750 for the 64GB model and $870 for the 128GB model.
