Nintendo announced late last year that it would be releasing a new console, the NX. Former Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata, before his passing, had made the announcement. "It will be a dedicated video game platform with a brand new concept," he had said. The NX, however, will not be a replacement for the Wii U or the 3DS.

Nintendo had initially planned to announce the new console in 2016. However, Iwata instead revealed it during Nintendo's 74th Fiscal Term Briefing held last December 2014.

Through the announcement, Iwata wanted to proclaim that the company has never lost its passion for their gaming systems.

"I intentionally chose to announce the development of NX so early because I wanted to confirm the fact that we are developing a new dedicated video game platform."

Iwata had planned to release more information regarding the upcoming NX console in 2016. Unfortunately, due to his passing, Iwata will not be able to see the release of the console.

According to GamingBolt, the NX console will not be a hybrid device. Rather, it is highly likely that Nintendo will be releasing both a handheld device and a console under the NX family system.

"Home consoles and handheld devices will no longer be completely different, and they will become like brothers in a family of systems," Iwata had announced last year.

The potential for an NX family system would be exciting and groundbreaking for the company. Nintendo could release games compatible for both devices, or even develop companion games to be played alongside each other.

According to PCAdvisor, the new console will have an improved design and will feature a new control method.

GamingBolt also revealed that Nintendo would be developing new hardware for the upcoming console or family system.

Nintendo's previous console, the Wii U, had been unsuccessful in luring third party developers to create games due to the hardware that it used; thus the Wii U failed to gain enough revenue from potential third party games. To date, the Wii U is considered as Nintendo's worst selling console.

To mitigate this situation from occurring again, the Nintendo NX will feature a new hardware that will give third-party developers more access and encourage them to continuously release software.

It seems that Nintendo is planning to use an AMD SOC processor to power its new console.

AMD CFO, Devinder Kumar, announced late last year that they are working on two major design wins. He elaborated saying that the first one will be the x86 and the will be the ARM.

Thus, there is a distinct chance Nintendo's new gaming system will feature AMD's APU. According to ExtremeTech, it is highly likely that the new Nintendo console will feature the AMD x86 SOC, similar to the Xbox One and PS4.

Nintendo will release more information in the coming months, ahead of a possible 2016 release of the new Nintendo NX gaming system.
