One of the most prominent cities in the world, New York City has found its digital home via the .NYC top-level domain (TLD).

"New York City is home to some of the most expensive real estate in the country. The 21st century real estate boom will also be online - with .NYC playing a key role in that boom," said GoDaddy's Senior Vice President and General Manager, Mike McLaughlin, in the official press release.

McLaughlin explained further, "The .NYC extension gives anyone in New York City a chance to display their New York pride online. With the domain name extension just launching, there are a tremendous number of quality names available for any New Yorker to purchase."

The new extension domain is reserved for residents of the Big Apple (or Five Boroughs) only.

"In order to register .NYC, you must supply a valid New York City street address where you live or own a business or organization (P.O. boxes don't qualify)," a policy at GoDaddy states.

GoDaddy has also set up a 110-foot barge, floating up and down the Hudson River, that says: "GoDaddy and New York are offering geo-specific domain names with .NYC. New Jersey does not have one. Here's hoping nobody there hears about this."

Location-based URLs have been there for quite some time, and serve a variety of purposes, specifically for businesses and travel.

In the US, Las Vegas and Miami have their own domain extensions, and so does London in the United Kingdom.

There are more than 10,000 (and counting) registrants for the .NYC domain so far.
