Sony recently revealed some of their plans for the upcoming virtual reality headset called PlayStation VR, and one of their targets is to make the wearable device capable of running any AAA game at a standard frame rate of 90 frames per second and at a minimum rate of 60 fps.

During Sony's appearance at the recent Montreal International Game Summit 2015, Sony Entertainment's Senior Technical Account Manager Vernon Harmon revealed that the company is now planning to make the PlayStation VR headset capable of running games at 90 fps, according to the report from PlayStation Lifestyle. Furthermore, the company is also encouraging developers to make 90 fps as their standard rate on their future games.

However, running a Triple-A game on a consistent 90 fps can sometimes have its setbacks in terms of graphics quality. One of the drawbacks in trying to achieve this is setting the quality to a much lower setting, from Ultra to High or, on a more severe case, High to Medium. In addition to that, Sony has set the bars on 60 fps as the minimum rate for the games.

Moreover, Harmon has warned users that "any dropped frames can cause discomfort, not just disruption of presence." Presumably, this means that when the frame rate goes down below 60 fps, it could cause some motion sickness problems to the players.

With that said, if Sony manages to achieve the 90 fps standard rate for the PlayStation VR, this could very well top its competitor, the Oculus Rift, with their consumer version, most especially in the specifications part where PlayStation 4 already has the required specs installed in the console giving it an advantage in the CPU/GPU combination, said industry analyst Michael Patcher
