While there have been rumblings for months that Sony is planning to cancel or sell off its smartphone business, it appears that the company has not lost faith in it completely. However, according to rumors, two existing smartphone lineups have bitten the dust and Sony is keen on concentrating only on the recently launched "X" lineup.

The discontinuation of the two lineups, namely the Sony "Xperia C" and "Xperia M" series, was reported by XperiaBlog recently. It went to add that with these two lineups being dropped and an earlier announcement that the flagship "Xperia Z" lineup will also be ending, Sony has only one smartphone lineup — the "Xperia X." The "X" lineup was announced earlier this year, and currently, this lineup has three phones included in it. These three include the Xperia X, Xperia XA, and Xperia X Performance.

XperiaBlog also seems to indicate that new devices are going to be brought out in the Xperia "X" lineup. One of these is going to be the "Xperia C6 Ultra," which has now been rebranded as the "Xperia X Ultra." This news about the scrapping of the two lineups follows rumors that Sony has entered into the third chapter of its smartphone development cycle and wants to thin its lineup.

Importantly, the Xperia lineup has not been selling well in the past few years, and last year, Xperia Z5 Compact, Xperia Z5, and the Xperia Z5 Premium, which has a unique 4K display, also underperformed. Earlier this year, soon after the Xperia X lineup arrived in February, the company indicated that the Xperia Z lineup was discontinued and did not provide any explanation. However, analysts were quick to point out that the Xperia X will quickly become the flagship smartphone lineup.

Among these three phones in the Xperia X lineup, the Xperia X Performance is being marketed as the flagship as it comes with the latest and fastest Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 820 chipset and 3 GB RAM.
