Sony Xperia Z4 gets Japan launch on NTT DoCoMo; carrier admits overheating complaints

Sony's new flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z4, which was recently launched exclusively for Japan, became available for purchase this week with the country's mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo. However, Japanese users have already begun complaining about the Xperia Z4 overheating, thanks to Qualcomm's beleaguered Snapdragon processor powering the smartphone, with the Japanese carrier even officially confirming that the device faces overheating problems.

Sony's Xperia Z4 is powered by Qualcomm's 64-bit octacore Snapdragon 810 processor, which has recently been in the news for its overheating issues. Samsung had decided to switch from using the Snapdragon 810 in its just released Galaxy S6 flagship to its homegrown Exynos chipset after discovering that Qualcomm's chip was overheating. Further, in a benchmark test conducted by a Dutch website on some of the flagship smartphones currently available in the market, the recently released HTC One M9 powered by the Snapdragon 810 had also exposed overheating issues of Qualcomm's latest chipset. Users of the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro had also reported severe cases of their phablet overheating, with some owners even complaining that their device had stopped functioning due to burnt motherboards. Other Mi Note Pro owners had complained of their touchscreen not functioning due to overheating, while other experienced severe overheating while charging the phablet.

Now Japanese users of the Xperia Z4 have taken to Twitter and other online platforms to vent their frustration over their devices heating up. In fact, the Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo has received so many overheating complaints of the Xperia Z4 that the company has slapped a warning label on the device, advising users to take precautions, such as regularly turn off the phone, switch it off while charging, and not perform too many tasks simultaneously. Some NTT DOCOMO retail outlets have even placed signs inside the shops cautioning customers about certain devices that could potentially overheat, including the Fujitsu ARROWS NX, the Sharp AQUOS Zeta, and the Sony Xperia Z4.

Sony is yet to officially acknowledge the overheating issue in the Xperia Z4, though user complaints and NTT DOCOMO's official acknowledgement of the problem has once again put Qualcomm in a tight spot over the infamous the Snapdragon 810 chipset.
