2016 Honda Civic: sporty and ambitious new look for next model

The Honda Civic, first released in 1973, has seen much better days. The iconic car underwent major redesigns back in 2006 and 2012, which led to unfavorable results. The 2006 redesign lost the quintessential features of the Civic and the 2012 model was panned for its poor driving and interior qualities. Fortunately, Honda has made an effort to correct its past mistakes with the release of the all-new 10th-generation Honda Civic.

According to John Mendel, Executive Vice President of American Honda Motors, the 10th-generation Civic underwent "the most ambitious remake" in the hopes of recapturing the sporty characteristic of the Civic and at the same time, creating a world-class compact car.

The 2016 model features Honda's all-new platform made of high-strength steel that is lighter but 25 percent stiffer. The chassis features a redesigned strut front suspension and a new multi-link rear suspension. Honda made significant changes under the hood in order to provide better car handling and a fun driving experience.

The 2016 Honda Civic Sedan now has a sporty, bold and attractive new design. The Sedan's lower stance and wider proportions give it an athletic stance. In terms of dimensions, the Civic Sedan is 2 inches wider, 1-inch lower, with a wheelbase that is 1.2 inches wider. It also sports a lower roofline, a more aggressive hood and a fastback-style tail.

The Civic's front fascia looks sharper featuring a chrome grille, LED headlights. The rear also features C-shaped LED taillights. Honda's press release also states that the Civic Sedan has a "crouched and muscular look, like a tiger ready to pounce."

Honda revealed that the 2016 Civic will feature two new powertrains including a 2.0-liter 16-valve i-VTEC four-cylinder engine with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The U.S. will also be getting the first Honda with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. More details about the powertrain will be announced during its November launch.

The 9th-generation Civic was criticized for its unimpressive interiors, which was not even comparable to its competitors during that time.

Now, the new Civic features an upscale cabin with high-tech features. The dashboard features a 7.0-inch touch-screen display with improved UI. It will be compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The seats are also 1-inch lower at the hip point, which gives it a sporty driving feel. The seats are also comfortable and spacious, with 2 inches more legroom space.

Honda will be releasing more details, including the price, later this year. The 2016 Civic Sedan is expected to launch during the Los Angeles Auto Show this November.

Honda will also be releasing different models under the Civic name after the release of the 2016 Sedan, including a Coupe, a Hatchback, an Si version and a Type-R variant.
