Mitsubishi has given its compact sports sedan a series of upgrades for 2016. The mid-cycle refresh gives the Lancer a new bolder look that will "set it apart from the pack," reports DigitalTrends.

The Lancer's front fascia gets a fresh new design with subtle chrome accents. The front bumper is bolder featuring a body-colored trim that separates the new chrome grille from the air dam. The upgrades also include vertical headlights, C-shaped LED daytime running lights, heated side view mirrors with turn indicators and new 18-inch alloy wheels.

There are also additional paint colors, including Diamond White Peal and Alloy Silver, that will help the 2016 model stand out amongst older models.

Meanwhile, Autoblog reports that the 2016 model also receives modest upgrades in its interior. The upgrades include a redesigned center console, an additional USB port, a standard display audio and the latest Mitsubishi touch-screen infotainment system (optional).

All Lancer models also get Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-function steering wheel, fog lights, automatic headlights and automatic air conditioning.

The standard 2016 model will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Higher trim levels can get the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 168 horsepower and 167 lb-ft of torque. While the base and GT models come with a five-speed manual transmission, the ES, SE and SEL all-wheel drive models get the latest continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The next-generation CVT gives the 2016 Lancer improved fuel efficiency, with 27 mpg during city driving and 35 mph for highway driving, as well as a smoother and improved driving experience.

According to Autoblog, Mitsubishi also gave the Lancer safety measures including an advanced seven air bag SRS system, anti-lock braking system, active stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, an anti-theft security alarm system and the Mitsubishi-patented Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer is expected to go on sale in the coming weeks. The standard model will have a base price of $17,595 but higher trim grades can cost up to $23,495.
